FINALLY SOME GOOD NEWS FOR BRICK AND MORTAR STORES?
E-commerce FOR BRICK AND MORTAR STORES?
Electricity killed kerosene, radio killed TV, and so will E-Commerce kill brick and mortar stores? This is a legitimate concern and question. The impending doom of the bricks and mortar store has been a belief held by many analyst. As that theory of doom might at face value hold true, recent data has suggested otherwise.
A report by the Business Insider indicated that ‘Reverse Showrooming’ is now the trend. What you may ask is ‘Reverse Showrooming’ and while we’re on the same topic what the heck is ‘Showrooming’?
Reverse Showrooming vs Showrooming
‘Showrooming’, an almost obscure tech word, is the act of visiting a physical store to view products and then venture online to search for cheaper prices. Stores tried providing online alternatives for customers. But that proved futile as customers still searched different online stores for cheaper prices. So you can imagine the horror of brick and mortar store owners when Amazon initiated a bar code scanner medium for customers to use at stores to compare prices with their own. That of-course has meet heavy criticism.
‘Reverse Showrooming’ on the other hand pertains to the act of an individual browsing online for products and then venturing into the physical store to make the purchase. According to a Harris poll %69 in the US ‘reverse showroom’.
The world now appears rosier for the ever demurred brick and mortar store. However does that avert the threat of e-commerce stores? Obviously not. As technology advances, online stores stand to benefit quicker. Please keep in mind this writer notes ‘quicker’ not necessarily better. That outcome is yet to be seen. What does that mean for brick and mortar stores?
It means …
- You MUST have a website
- You MUST have a web presence
- You MUST have a social presence
- You MUST maintain an open mind to new technological advances as it might benefit your business
- Your Site MUST be maintained to showcase and reflect current products.
