WorldCup and The Lessons You Still Haven’t Learnt
Were You a Winner at The WorldCup?

What have business insiders learnt from the now completed World Cup? Nothing yet it will appear. Unless you’re living under a rock, which many Americans tend to be when it comes to soccer, Germany won the world cup.
Univision and ESPN appeared to be among the few US companies that benefited or knew how to market the World Cup. Univision garnered a remarkable 80 million viewers for the event, that’s a 60% increase from last 4 years ago. Expect Telemundo who outbid Univision for the exclusive rights to air the 2018 Cup to take full advantage of this.
The question you as small business owners should ask is how did my company benefit from the world’s largest sporting event. Did you align your marketing strategy with the World Cup? Or did you idly stay by and watch in bliss ignorance as other companies made money and marketed their product or service? The advantage small businesses have in the US as compared to other nations is that “soccer” is still a relatively unpopular but sought after sport. As the years pass by it will only prove more popular.
1: Be creative
2: Be preemptive, don’t jump on the bandwagon you come off pretentious.
3: Always and Always be neutral. Keep in mind your products are for the masses not just the NY Yankees.
4: Engage your followers with questions, mentions, offerings or prizes.
5: And for the love of all that is good please try and relate to the event. It’s awful when someone doesn’t even know what the sporting event is called.
