Yahoo and Bing went down earlier today.
Morning non- googlers, you might have noticed that Yahoo and Bing went down earlier today. No it wasn’t the North Koreans nor any nefarious hackers.
For business owners with websites we are all too familiar with the possibility of a website going down for some reason or the other. Whether it’s a host or some bad misconfiguration. In the case of Yahoo and Bing this morning, it was bad coding. Yep, just one string of code can shut it down and cause the imminent domino effect experienced by the world’s second biggest search engine. Bing was the culprit which powers Yahoo’s search and caused Live.com and Hotmail.com to also go down temporarily, thus revealing the domino effect.
But what can online businesses do to avoid this? The answer is unfortunately nothing. This for now is part of the hazards of online businesses. We can try and alleviate the issue by moving with cloud services for hosting issues, improve security portals, or avoid human errors (none of these are guaranteed). But don’t lose hope better mediums on avoiding errors and temporary shut downs are in the works.
